Upgrade LM to the Latest Version With an Existing License

Overview

You are running LM 11.x or 12.x and would like to upgrade to the latest version using your existing license. You would like to know how to prepare for the upgrade, download the installer for your platform, and the instructions to perform the upgrade.

Prerequisites

Solution

Prepare for the Upgrade

  1. Perform a full database backup
  2. Make a complete backup of List manager installation folder
    1. Windows: C:\Program Files\ListManager\
    2. Linux: ~/ListManager/
    3. Specially the below files.
      1. lmcfg.txt
        1. Windows: C:\Program Files\ListManager\lmcfg.txt
        2. Linux: ~/ListManager/bin/lmcfg.txt
      2. tclhttpd.rc
        1. Windows: ...\tclweb\bin\tclhttpd.rc
        2. Linux: .../tclweb/bin/tclhttpd.rc
      3. SSL Certificates - .pem, .key, and .ca files
          1. Windows: ...\tclweb\bin\certs\
          2. Linux: .../tclweb/bin/certs/
  3. Test Before Upgrading.

We recommend that you evaluate ListManager's latest version on a test machine before deploying to production. If you prefer to use your production ListManager server, only do so if you plan to upgrade it to the latest version.

DO NOT use the release on your production server if you might want to go back to an older version of ListManager. Once you upgrade, you will not be able to downgrade back to the older version.

Perform the Upgrade on Windows

  1. Shut down ListManager and the ListManager web server

  2. Double click on the ListManager installer icon

  3. When running the ListManager installer, select "Upgrade" instead of "New Install", and provide the installer with the path where ListManager is currently installed. The installer will automatically copy the data if necessary and upgrade the database. Use your existing Serial Code when prompted by the ListManager installer
NOTE Upgrading the database may take several hours, depending on the size of your data

  4. Allow the installer to start ListManager and the ListManager web server

Upgrade Common Questions

  • Can we roll back the upgrade?

No, please backup the database before upgrading so that you can rollback your installation if something goes wrong.

  • Would the server be stopped during the upgrade process?

Yes, the ListManager services should be stopped during the upgrade. Not doing so could cause the DB to be corrupted. Also, note that any member sending emails to your listserver before the services are restarted should receive an undelivered error.

  • How long does the upgrade take?

Installing ListManager is straightforward and fast. However, upgrading the DB to the newest schema could take a time depending of your DB size. If the upgrade process seems to stall, please notice that this is expected behavior.

  • Do we have to pay to upgrade ListManager?

No, installing/upgrading ListManager is free if your License Expiration Date or Last Day to Upgrade have not passed.
